July 31, 2013 - French engine manufacturer SMA/Safran, whose four-cylinder diesel SMA SR305-230E made news at Oshkosh last year as the chosen powerplant for the new Cessna Turbo Skylane NXT, showed that engine's "big brother, " the six-cylinder SR460, Tuesday at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2013.

Very little is known about which airframe the new air-cooled and direct-driven SR460 is going to power. The company says it doesn't want to compromise negotiations with "important OEMs."

What SMA brought to AirVenture is a "very advanced project state" engine that uses several new components as well as some from the four-cylinder engine.

Thierry Hurtes, SMA chairman and CEO, described the engine in few words: "Take the four-cylinder SR305-230 engine and multiply it with 1.5 - you will get the SR430."

That equation is not really precise because the SR430 engine differs in several points from the four-cylinder "brother." First because its "hot" parts - the exhaust manifolds - are now above the engine. The two turbochargers are behind the engine, making the whole package very flat and compact. The fuel injection pumps are mechanically driven by the camshaft and ECU assisted for better economy.

The engine will weigh 595 pounds dry and deliver 330 to 400 hp. Maximum ceiling is 25,000 feet, and full power will be delivered up to 10,000 feet MSL.

The engine will begin production at the end of 2014 with FAA/EASA certification planned in 2015. SMA is targeting the single- and twin-engine market initially, but it is considered as the "ideal" twin fit.
