Kermit Weeks leads a crew flying his newly purchased C-47 from the UK to Oshkosh in time for AirVenture.

A legendary flying World War II aircraft, the C-47 Dakota N1944A, is coming back home from a long stay in Europe, and just in time for AirVenture Oshkosh. The aircraft, which saw duty in some of the most important battles of the war, was purchased in the UK this week by Kermit Weeks for Fantasy of Flight's flying aircraft collection in Polk City, Florida. But first, according to FOF's Facebook page, "N1944A will make its Homecoming Debut at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where it will be displayed for a few months, before flying south to Fantasy of Flight."

N1944A is among the relative few surviving WWII aircraft that saw duty during the conflict, including participation in the D-Day Invasion, Operation Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge, Crossing of the Rhine, and repatriation of POWs at war's end.

Weeks and Verne Jobst, who has 8,000 hours in DC-3s, will make the North Atlantic crossing along with crewmembers Glen Moss (two crossings, one in a DC-3) and FOF staffers Andy Salter and Wayne Root. The flight will include elements of the "Great Circle Route," but, Weeks joked, they may deviate slightly to the "Great Scenic Route."

Watch the FOF Facebook page for updates, photos, and observations as they occur.
