 Canadian Marty Abbott, flying the race 104
Turbine Lancair Legend C-GUTT, averaged 401.09 mph in Sunday's running
of the AirVenture Cup Race from Mitchell, South Dakota, to Fond du Lac,
Wisconsin. That marked the first time a plane had eclipsed the 400 mph
barrier in average speed, said race co-chairman Eric Whyte.
"We also had the third most aircraft
participating," he said, with 61 originally entered and 51
eventually racing. Airplanes, all homebuilts, were split into 16
classes-also an all-time high.
Whyte said the city of Mitchell rolled
out the red carpet for racers. "They had an airport open house on
Saturday, and 2,000 from the local community attended," he said.
There was a Learn to Fly information booth, and the state's Department
of Transportation participated as well. Racers also flew 251 Young
Eagles.
EAA Chapter 289 from Sioux Falls did a
fly-in breakfast on Saturday to kick off the open house. The Mitchell
Convention and Visitors Bureau also got behind the event. "The idea
was to promote GA, and we succeeded," Whyte added.
