Applications are now available for the 13th running of the AirVenture Cup Race slated for Sunday, July 25. Racers can compete in 11 different classes, from light-sport eligible aircraft up to unlimiteds. All aircraft must qualify as experimental amateur-built. The race will launch once again from Mitchell, South Dakota, home of the "Corn Palace," and features a straight-line course direct the finish line at Snow Crest Ranch, a private airstrip in Montello, Wisconsin. Racers will then land at a rally airport for sequencing into Oshkosh.

"The race is a great opportunity for EAA members based in the western U.S. to participate in this event," said AirVenture Cup Chairman and Founder Eric Whyte. "Mitchell really rolled out the red carpet in 2008 when we first brought the race there, and they are very excited to have us back."

Race events begin in Mitchell on Friday, July 23, and an airport open house on Saturday include the race pit area, which will be open to the public. Whyte urges anyone interested in participating to submit their applications soon. The application fee is $250 thru June 14. From June 15 until July 16 the fee rises to $275. Registration for the race closes on July 16.

The AirVenture Cup race was started to revive the air racing traditions of the 1930s and to provide EAA members an opportunity to continue to innovate with their airplanes. The race has traditionally begun in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and now originates in Dayton, Ohio. The Mitchell, South Dakota course was added in 2008 to provide a "downwind" course on alternating years. Download an application here.
