July 28, 2009 - Oshkosh, WisconsinDeke Holman, of Napa, California, may be working at AirVenture, but as a tech inspector for Air Show Operations, he says he has a “ring-side seat” to all the activity.

Holman, a volunteer for 33 years, has worked as a tech inspector for nearly 30 years, making sure that the airplanes that will be flying in the daily air show are ready to go.

“I just do a visual check-off and look at the registration, the logbook…and things like that,” he said. “I basically inspect all the paperwork of the airplanes… But those airplanes are almost always better than brand new.”

For his work and dedication, Holman will receive the Preston Little Award at 10 a.m. today at the announcer’s stand. The award honors a member of the Air Show Operations team for exceptional dedication, leadership, and devotion to EAA.

“I couldn’t enjoy the convention more than I already do,” he said. “The airplanes are great, but it’s the people you meet that I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

FUTURE AIRVENTURE DATES: 2014: July 28-Aug. 3; 2015: July 20-26; 2016: July 25-31; 2017: July 24-30
