Bendex/King by Honeywell, a well-known manufacturer of aircraft navigation and safety systems, has announced three new portable avionics for general aviation pilots at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008. Dubbed the AV8OR Series, these new devices include a variety of powerful, portable GPS navigation solutions. The series includes the AV8OR Handheld multi-function display and two synthetic-vision-equipped portable cockpit information systems—the AV8OR Horizon 3D and AV8OR Vision 3D.

"The AV8OR Handheld offers easy-to-use GPS with a 4.3-inch screen, simple interface, and touch-screen technology," said Chet Cundiff, Bendix/King vice president of crew interface products. "‘Touch and see’ and ‘touch and drag’ allow the pilot to interact with the screen directly. It’s built for pilots, and built on the software that’s been developed over the past 10 years."

In addition to pilot-specific features, the AV80R Handheld includes an all-in-one multimedia player with the ability to play music, movies, pictures, and electronic books. "The AV8OR Handheld is ideal for any pilot that requires GPS navigation in the air or in the car, real-time weather, and navigator graphical moving map, with built-in entertainment system," said Dan Barks, director of general aviation aftermarket avionics. With the price set at $749, Bendix/King believes the AV80R Handheld will "set the market on fire."

The AV8OR Horizon 3D and AV8OR Vision 3D include synthetic vision graphical rendering of the environment, providing pilots with a realistic view of the aircraft position and situation outside of the cockpit, displaying real-time satellite weather information. The systems are an asset to both visual flight rules and instrument flight rules (IFR) pilots who seek enhanced situational awareness with the flexibility offered by a portable system, the company said.

The AV8OR Horizon 3D includes a modern Samsung tablet PC with a high-resolution touch-screen display. The AV8OR Vision 3D features a rugged, ultra-high brightness touch-screen display and remote-mounted computer module. Both systems include attitude and heading reference systems with GPS, as well as optional traffic sensors and datalink weather receivers.

The AV8OR Horizon 3D features a 7-inch LCD screen and will sell for $4,995; the AV8OR Vision 3D sports an 8.3-inch LCD screen (price to be determined).

Honeywell also announced that it is accepting orders for the Bendix/King Apex Edge Series, a new line of IFR certified avionics for general aviation aircraft. The first two units in the series are the KSN 770 integrated navigation and communication multi-function display, priced at $13,995, and the KFD 840 primary flight display, priced at $16,995.

The KSN 770 offers the latest in digital navigation/communication radio technology, a full wide area augmentation system GPS navigator, a 5.7-inch video graphics array display, and a modern hardware architecture with the ability to be upgraded in the field.

The KFD 840 provides primary flight information on a large 8.4-inch diagonal high-resolution display. The unit integrates an advanced air data attitude heading and reference system designed to operate without GPS or other sensor aiding. In addition, the 840 includes features such as a remote magnetometer, aircraft checklist, and weight and balance calculator. The unit will be certified with an approved model list supplemental type certificate, covering a wide range of aircraft with a gross weight of less than 6,000 pounds.

The company is also offering an XM Weather system update for its KMD 550/850 multifunction display, available at no charge with the purchase of a database update. With this update, operators can now display temporary flight restrictions, lightning, severe weather storm tracking, winds aloft at altitude, freezing levels, precipitation type at surface, and translated METAR weather reports.
