Understanding Air Traffic Control at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

VFR ARRIVAL HINTS AND TIPS - FISK VFR APPROACH CONTROL

ATC Home | To Ripon and Beyond | Fisk VFR Approach Control | Holding | Do Not Pass Fisk Without Approval | Emergencies

This is a temporary Air Traffic Control facility (consisting of nothing more than a travel trailer with an awning) that is positioned on a hill north / northwest of Fisk, WI.

From this outdoor vantage point, utilizing binoculars, radio, and a set of strobes, the Fisk controller team uses their combined ATC experience to:

a. locate you
b. visually identify your type and color
c. quickly assess the sequence
d. determine a plan (which runway you'll be assigned)
e. communicate instructions to you

This rapid sequence of events takes place over and over, to each aircraft heading for AirVenture.

As you approach Fisk (staying over the railroad tracks), you may see the Fisk ATC facility atop the hill.

Vigilance
There may be several aircraft of similar type in your vicinity, so please be vigilant to ensure the instructions issued were intended for you!

Flights of Two or More
Flights of two or more aircraft are more difficult to work - both by the Fisk controllers and the tower controllers as well. These flights are discouraged for the following reasons:

  1. We base our procedures at Fisk upon “In-Trail” separation.
  2. It is difficult to distinguish a flight from one aircraft “overtaking” another.
  3. It is more difficult for a flight to maneuver as needed/requested to achieve/maintain required in-trail spacing.
  4. It is more difficult for a flight to land and clear the runway (taking longer) than for individual aircraft in-trail.

Slow Flight Maneuvering
Throughout the VFR arrival procedure you may be required to maneuver your aircraft at various altitudes and airspeeds (as well as hold) in order to maintain proper spacing from aircraft ahead.

When this occurs do your best, within the capabilities of both you and your aircraft, to comply.

Please ensure that you “brush up” on your “slow flight” piloting skills prior to your departure for Oshkosh. We (ATC and you) will feel more comfortable knowing that you are operating within the capabilities of both you and your aircraft.
