It was 1968 when John Hatz first flew the
biplane dubbed CB-1 and later named Happiness. Forty years later,
the hundreds of builders, pilots and owners of Hatzes want to celebrate.
The Hatz Biplane Association (HBA) decided that 2008 will be the year of
"Forty on the Fortieth" to be celebrated during the HBA Annual
Meeting at Brodhead, Wisconsin; and also, "H20" (Hatzes to
Oshkosh).
"We think the most Hatzes we've ever
had in one place at one time was a dozen or maybe 14," said HBA
President Kevin Conner, EAA 700293, of Collinsville, Oklahoma. "It's
time we do our best to pull Hatzes and Kelly Ds from all over the country,
to gather and honor these great biplanes, the man that built the first
one, and those who have built and flown them since. It's only natural that
we do all we can to get them together at our annual meeting and also at
Oshkosh."
