AirVenture Seaplane Base
Nestled in a cozy cove off the west shore of Lake Winnebago
Nestled deep in the trees in
a picturesque cove along the Lake Winnebago shore is a place where all
AirVenture visitors should try to visit: The AirVenture Seaplane Base,
where the runway requirements specify depth as well as length. A shuttle ride makes regular runs between the AirVenture grounds and the
seaplane base. The stop is located just south of the
ultralight runway.
Seaplane base-pace offers a
respite from AirVenture’s hustle and bustle. People often just sit on
the shore and watch the planes come and go. The base makes the
surrounding waters one of the more popular hangouts for curious local
boaters.
The most flying activity at
seaplane base comes on Saturday when any willing seaplane pilot can do
fly-bys along the convention flight line in the annual seaplane
showcase. Pilots depart the base in a coordinated, orderly fashion by
lining up, taxiing out to form three large circles based on the their
size and speed, then taking off at appointed times so they can be
identified during their flight line fly-bys.
The nightly events included bonfires, karaoke, a
fish fry, and the annual watermelon social.
A special Seaplane Base
shuttle is operated every day. The
shuttle runs approx. every hour.
