The
restored Lockheed P-38 WWII fighter, Glacier Girl, is still
expected to attend EAA AirVenture Oshkosh next week, however it’s not
expected to arrive until Wednesday, July 25, owners have told EAA. Last
month the airplane embarked on a flight across the Atlantic to recreate
the Operation Bolero flight
that was aborted in 1942, but that flight was postponed on June 28 during
its final North American leg due to engine problems. The airplane is
currently having both engines swapped out in an effort to be able to fly
to Oshkosh next week.
Due to the delayed arrival, Glacier Girl
was forced to pull out of the National Aviation Hall of Fame’s first “Best
of the Best” People’s Choice Award competition taking place at
AirVenture this year. Ron Kaplan, executive director of the National
Aviation Heritage Invitational, said this week that the competition is
still a go, as organizers attempt to replace Glacier Girl (as well
as the Spartan Executive that was damaged in a landing incident late last
week) with two other previous NAHI award winners.
“The contest is still a go, and we’ll
have folks at Oshkosh with voting taking place Monday through Friday,”
he said.
