Everyone has a favorite place. But 7-year-old Lauren Rankin’s favorite place, and a photo of it, won her first-place honors in the statewide "My Favorite Place" competition sponsored by PTA Reflections in Missouri.

Lauren, daughter of Scott and Karen Rankin of Kansas City, Missouri, took her winning photo at the EAA Seaplane Base during the 2006 fly-in and convention. When she heard about the competition as a kindergarten student, she said she immediately thought of AirVenture.

"It is my favorite place," she said.

She said she decided to enter the photo, taken when she was 6, in black and white since she didn’t like the greenish hue on the water. Her photo was displayed at the statewide PTA convention in the preschool-second grade category.

Of all the photos she entered, why did she choose the seaplane one as her favorite?

"I like to take pictures of all different airplanes," she said. "But seaplanes are like no other planes. Seaplanes have water skis on the bottom so they can land and stay on the water. They’re just cool."
