An Evening with Champions,
EAA AirVenture’s unofficial kickoff program, marks its 21st year at
Theater in the Woods on Sunday evening. The program, presented by
AviationSpeakers.com, begins at 7:30 and features Bill Lishman, the man
behind the movie, Fly Away Home; Frank D. Boring, producer of the
PBS film Fei Hu, The Story of the Flying Tigers; and Astronaut
Dr. Jay Apt. Danny Mortensen, president of Bill Phelps’ Airline Ground
Schools, author, and Reno Gold Trophy winner, will again serve as Master
of Ceremonies.
7:30 p.m. Think you know
about the Wright brothers? You may be surprised! Betty Darst portrays
Katharine Wright and shares her insight into the world of the Wright
brothers in an accurate, honorable portrayal with a fierce dedication to
detail and history.
A gifted historian, Betty
brings history to life through a multi-media presentation, showing rare
photos, letters, and diaries. The depth of her research is immediately
evident, as it includes personal interviews with the family. She gives a
remarkable personal account of the First Family of Aviation; people
forget that she isn’t really Katharine. After seeing Betty’s gift
for re-creating history firsthand, Paul Poberezny said, "I gained a
new appreciation for the Wrights."
8:15 p.m. Frank D. Boring
created Fei Hu, The Story of the Flying Tigers from 70 hours of
interviews in four countries and from flying footage shot in Burma and
China during the American Volunteer Group effort there before Pearl
Harbor was attacked. This group of volunteer fighter pilots were
prepared to take on the entire Japanese military at the Burma and China
front lines. Frank’s 11 years of comprehensive work researching the
Flying Tigers results in a colorful, one-of-a-kind multimedia show,
Talking With Tigers.
Frank interweaves
archival flying film footage with filmed pilot interviews, mixing
insider details and little known and funny stories to bring history to
life.
9 p.m. Dr. Jay Apt spent
more than 35 days in space on four space shuttle missions and has
performed two space walks. He’s been to the Russian space station Mir
and is a recipient of NASA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service
Medal. The Harvard graduate earned his doctorate from MIT. With 4,500
hours in 25 types of aircraft, he’s flown personally to Greenland,
Guatemala, the United Kingdom and Alaska.
Dr. Apt presents Far
Beyond the Blue Sky, a stunning presentation of the most recent two
decades of space flight. From the dazzling Hubble photographs to radar
images of Earth and Venus, and the construction of the International
Space Station, get an up-to-the-minute report on the wonders being
created in Earth orbit. Similar breathtaking imagery is found in his
book Orbit: NASA Astronauts
Photograph the Earth.
